Building the All-Time Illinois-Born Blackhawks lineup

The Chicago Blackhawks are an Original Six franchise, the only hockey team in one of the country’s top sports markets, with a deep history of Stanley Cup titles and Hall of Fame careers. Ahead of the 2026 season, a total of 946 skaters and 98 goalies have worn the iconic Blackhawks sweater; however, only 15 of those skaters and two goalies have been born in Illinois and skated with the club. Today, we want to piece together the all-time all-Illinois Chicago lineup.

Goalie - Craig Anderson (Park Ridge, IL)

CHI stats: 56GP - 12-29-4 - 3.19 GAA .892 SV%

Craig Anderson is one of the winningest American-born goalies of all time, with 319 victories on his resume, and debuted with the Blackhawks in 2002-03. He played 56 games with his hometown team before skating for five other clubs, mostly with the Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres, over a 20-year career that included a 2017 Masterton Trophy win.

Defenseman - Chris Chelios (Chicago, IL)

CHI stats: 664GP - 92G - 395A - 487PTS

If someone said that Hall of Famer Chris Chelios is the greatest Illinois-born player in NHL history, there wouldn’t be much of an argument based on his extensive resume over 1,651 games. Besides winning three Stanley Cups with three different Original Six teams, he also captured three Norris Trophies as a member of the Montreal Canadiens and Blackhawks. Known for his intense training habits, Chelios played 26 seasons in the NHL, including nine with the Blackhawks from 1990 to 1999, where he served as captain from 1995 to 1999.

Defenseman - Alex Vlasic (Wilmette, IL)

CHI stats: 260GP - 9G - 61A - 70PTS *

Alex Vlasic is the only current player to crack the list and gets the nod over Mike O’Connell (1977-81). Although O’Connell played in the NHL for 13 years, he played in Chicago for only four years, scoring 18 goals and 79 points in 166 games. Meanwhile, Vlasic is just 25 and has already logged 260 games for the Blackhawks, scoring nine goals and 70 points. When he gets ten more points, he’ll be the team’s second-highest-scoring Illinois-born defenseman, overtaking O’Connell and sitting behind Chelios.

Right Wing - Eddie Olczyk (Chicago, IL)

CHI stats: 322GP - 77G - 132A - 209PTS

Eddie Olczyk began and finished his career with his hometown Blackhawks, skating from 1984 to 1986 and again from 1998 to 2000. The former third overall pick from the 1984 Draft would win the Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers in 1994. Regarding his place among all-time Illinois-born players, Olczyk ranks second in points (794), behind Chelios’ 948.

Left Wing - Vinnie Hinostroza (Chicago, IL)

CHI stats: 123GP - 17G - 34A - 51PTS

According to statistics at NHL.com, the Blackhawks have never had a true “left winger” from Illinois in their history. Moreover, if you look up Vinnie Hinostroza’s profile, he’s listed as a center, but the deeper someone digs, they will learn he played wing plenty of times throughout his career. Interestingly, his Elite Prospects profile doesn’t indicate that he’s a center, which means that with 123 games and 51 games, Hinostroza is one of the most versatile wingers in Chicago history.

Center - John Hayden (Chicago, IL)

CHI stats: 113GP - 8G - 14A - 22PTS

By sliding Hinostroza over to fill a spot on the wing, it is slim pickings for Illinois-born centers to skate with the Blackhawks. However, with 113 games, John Hayden is one of just seven skaters to reach 100 games with Chicago. Moreover, with 22 points, he is one of eight players from Illinois ever to reach double digits in a Blackhawks sweater.
