The Chicago Blackhawks reported top candidate to be the team's head coach has withdrawn his name from consideration.

According to hockey insider Elliotte Friedman, University of Denver head coach David Carle is no longer pursuing the job.

This is not the end of the world, but it is a blow to the hopes of getting a strong head coach.

The reason Carle was so attractive is that he has won at the World Junior level and the NCAA level. He has a proven track record of relating to young players.

With the Hawks having a youthful core next season, Carle was the ideal coach to grow with the baby Blackhawks.

Instead, the Blackhawks will have shift their focus elsewhere.

It is not like there are not a lot of candidates to choose from. The Hawks will be able to get someone better than Anders Sorenson.

However, it will be a major blow if Carle decides to take another NHL job.

Then you must wonder what Carle sees as a problem with the Hawks' job that he would reject their money and potential for another organization.

The one mitigating factor in not getting Carle is that he has never coached at the NHL level. Winning the NCAA Frozen Four is impressive. Winning a Stanley Cup is a much bigger task.

If the Blackhawks want to go with a college coach, they should take a run at Western Michigan head coach Pat Ferschweiler. He just beat Carle in the Frozen Four semifinals and won a title with no player making any NIL money.

Jay Woodcraft is another name-brand head coach the Blackhawks could pursue. So, while it would have been great to have Carle given his winning pedigree, it is not like the Hawks still cannot hire an upgrade over Sorenson and Luke Richardson.
