The Chicago Blackhawks have made it known that the reins will be taken over by the young guys, with Connor Bedard likely signing his long-term contract and earning the captaincy. The alternates will most likely be Alex Vlasic and Tyler Bertuzzi, should he remain with the team, barring any kind of trade. Well, that's what's expected at least.
It is possible that the Blackhawks may not attempt to make a move for a veteran defenseman like Rasmus Andersson, believing in their young core. However, I do not share the same sentiment. I am not convinced that the coaching staff is enough to lead the young defense into the future, and Alex Vlasic hasn't been in the league long enough to understand what actually works for him, much less anyone else.
Either way, the Blackhawks need a vocal, veteran presence
Other options include Darren Raddysh, fresh off a 70-point campaign for the Tampa Bay Lightning, a breakout season for the 30-year-old. However, with many prospects expecting their bridge deals in the next couple of seasons, I don't know if it would be feasible to take on such a massive cap hit. The Blackhawks likely need to bring on a cheaper option, under $4 million, for the next couple of seasons.
I'm likely the only one on this boat, but I wouldn't mind seeing Connor Murphy back as a Blackhawk. He will likely sign with a contender to chase the Stanley Cup, hopefully on a roster that is solidly built, but I think this was the ideal situation for the Blackhawks defense. Another option could be John Carlson if he doesn't want to chase a Cup anymore, or Jacob Trouba, who is known for elevating the game of young defensemen, and adds the sandpaper the blueline is desperately needing.
So, yes, the Blackhawks need to add a veteran defenseman who has played in big games. It is unlikely that the Blackhawks' defense will improve without a mentor to teach them how to maintain their top form and play consistent hockey. This is still a young team, and remember that it was the signing of Marian Hossa that took the Blackhawks to the promised land in 2009-10, a veteran who has been in every kind of game there was. This team needs that presence to take their game to the next level.
