Well, it didn’t take long for former Boston Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery to find a new landing spot, and what a move from St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong. The Blues, who’d been ailing under head coach Drew Bannister, made the blockbuster coaching swap, and maybe the Blackhawks should consider doing the same.
Right now, the Hawks are right down there with the Montreal Canadiens as the worst team in hockey heading into Sunday’s slate of games with 16 points. And you can argue their current head coach, Luke Richardson, is wasting a generational talent in his subpar bid to prove he should stick around in Chicago.
Threatening to turn Connor Bedard into the 2020s version of Nail Yakupov (exaggeration) may seem like a stretch, but let’s face it: Bedard has been a headache to watch lately, with just two points in his last six games, and he hasn’t scored a goal since October.
That said, the Blues (should) have put teams like the Blackhawks and Canadiens on notice, and their respective fan bases should demand a change if and when another big-name head coach becomes available.
Kyle Davidson must seriously consider following division rival’s lead
If the Blackhawks showed at least a little improvement this season, we may not be having this conversation. But that hasn’t been the case through what is now 21 games. Overall, it’s been a letdown of a season for a fanbase that expected better results after one of its better offseasons. But with poor results on the ice and a bold move from their biggest rival, it’s time for Kyle Davidson to ‘do something’ the second another big-name coach is shown the door.
Could you imagine how much faster the process would speed up if the Hawks got someone behind the bench who actually knows what they’re doing? Someone with credentials and a name that would rile up the fans? Because I can tell you right now, those fans over in Gateway City just got a lot more interested in hockey this season after watching their team flail for the first quarter of the season.
So why not take a page out of Armstrong’s book, a general manager who has, by far, made the biggest and most impactful moves since the 2024 offseason began? The Blues are a team Blackhawks fans wouldn’t mind keeping pace with.
