The Chicago Blackhawks are facing a 4-12-1 record in the midst of a five-game losing streak.
With that, many have wondered whether the team will make any decisions to get back on track.
Insider Elliotte Friedman shared what he thinks the organization could be considering.
Blackhawks could still be looking to make a move
Over a week ago, Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff said on the CHSN broadcast that general manager Kyle Davidson was inquiring about shoot-first wingers with size, but that he hadn't made much traction on those calls because it's hard to find teams willing to engage this early in the season.
But it seems like Davidson could still be on the hunt.
On Nov. 5, Friedman joined the DMase, Vingan & Daunic podcast, and he was asked about the Blackhawks. The question was, "I'm wondering if heads will roll at any point, Elliotte, or will cooler heads prevail in Chicago?"
Friedman responded:
"I think they'll try to make some moves first. I do. Kyle Davidson, the GM, got a big extension in the offseason, so I don't see it being him. I don't think they want to make the coach [Jeff Blashill] the scapegoat, so I don't necessarily think it's going to be him. Although, like, when things go badly, the coach often takes the heat there. I don't think they want to do that. I think they're going to try to make a move first."
So, with Friedman and Seravalli, there is added fire on the trade noise for the Blackhawks.
Going the trade route could make sense for them. It's clear that something is failing the Blackhawks right now, and as much as you could make an argument for seeing things through, as it's still early in the season, something should be done. You don't want to see this team trend downward if something could help.
It is an interesting route, though, because, as Seravalli reported, it's hard to make trades at this time of the season. But teams can always up the ante depending on their needs at any point.
I pondered with the initial Seravalli report; just how aggressive Davidson is willing to be.
If he is exploring the market, is he thinking more of a minor swap? Or is he potentially thinking of a bigger move?
If something were to come to fruition on the trade front, maybe that could bring a spark. We have seen time and time again that sometimes new blood and energy can really help a roster, especially if they turn out to be a good fit.
The Blackhawks could use the reinforcement
Cole Smith was asked postgame about the mood of the team after their 4-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Nov. 5,
"Probably disappointed. I think we all expect better from ourselves, and you know, being in the position we're in right now, I think disappointment's a big one. Obviously, losing games wears on you a bit, but it's a long year. So, I mean, it's early. So, we got to find it and start winning some games."
We have heard the sentiment from the players all season about the Blackhawks being young, hungry, and eager to compete.
Who knows? Maybe they will find a way to gain some ground again on their own. But it's a steep climb. They could use some reinforcement.
Again, you don't want to see them keep struggling the way they have. As Smith said, losing takes a toll.
With Friedman thinking the Blackhawks will try to make a move, the trade route seems like one to watch. If anything comes of the chatter, we'll see.
Trades are easier said than done.
But it's something to keep in mind, nonetheless.
