Trade season, while stressful for players, is so much fun for us fans. We get to speculate, pontificate, ruminate... (any other "ate" words as well) and imagine brighter days ahead.
These trades are going to range from very realistic to very unrealistic. I will do my best to rank the likelihood of each trade accordingly.
Let's have some fun!
Seth Jones
Why not start off with the big one first? I will go on record now saying that I don't expect Jones to be moved at this deadline, but I think it's possible that he is moved this summer. However, for the sake of this article we will be operating under the notion that he is moved at the deadline.
Trade with Columbus
This trade may seem unremarkable to Hawks fans but let's be honest; if we are moving Seth Jones' entire contract, the return probably won't be spectacular.
However, in this trade Chicago gets a legitimate top six forward in Voronkov who is still 24.
Selfishly I love this trade because the Hawks also get NHL axe-murderer Mathieu Olivier, who may very well be the toughest (and scariest) guy in the league.
Columbus meanwhile gets Jones. A legitimate No. 2 or 3 defenseman who can greatly improve their overall defense while they push for the playoffs this season and beyond.
They also take a flier on Philipp Kurahsev whose days with the Hawks appear numbered and they receive a prospect as well. This is as realistic a Seth Jones trade as I have.
Trade with Dallas
This trade is less likely, but it lands Dallas a very good defenseman who can bolster their defensive depth as they approach the postseason, as well as a very solid defensive prospect in EDM, and a second-round pick to take all of Jones' contract. In return the Hawks take on the oft injured Tyler Seguin's huge deal for the next three seasons.
When healthy, Seguin would provide a huge boost to the Hawks forward core, as he is still a very effective second line center. In this scenario, the Hawks would be adding a more expensive player than Jones but with three less years on his deal.
The big fish here though is Logan Stankoven. While he hasn't had a highly productive season, Stankoven is a very highly regarded prospect who could play alongside Connor Bedard.
I liked him a lot in the postseason last year as well, and as the Hawks look to improve their roster going forward he fits well into our rebuild timeline. He's a kid with massive upside.
Trade with Utah Club
Utah receives | Chicago receives |
---|---|
Seth Jones | Ian Cole |
Matias Maccelli | |
2026 2nd round pick |
This one is not very likely in my opinion, but I think both sides would consider this.
The Hawks move Jones and get out from under his contract in exchange for taking on Ian Cole and a struggling young player in Matias Maccelli. Maccelli had 17 goals and 57 points just last season, but this season he has only 18 points.
He signed a two-year contract worth $3.425 million, and it seems like a change of scenery could benefit him. The Hawks also pick up a second-round pick here. For Utah, acquiring Jones would massively improve their D-core which outside of Mikhail Sergachev is deeply unimpressive.
