It might be worth it for the Chicago Blackhawks to bring back this former head coach

The Chicago Blackhawks did not win a lot of games when Trent Yawney was the team's head coach two decades ago.

Then again, he did not have much to work with.

He did have a young Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, and Patrick Sharp, but they were just starting their legendary careers.

Otherwise, he was coaching the cheap players that owner Bill Wirtz liked at the time, while then general manager Dale Tallon was collecting the talent that would go on to win three Stanley Cups.

Since Yawney was fired in November of 2006, he has gone on to develop a long list of blueliners as an assistant coach.

With the Blackhawks having some young defenders who have the potential to be elite, it might be worth exploring bringing Yawney back.

Granted, there are better names to hire to be the team's next head coach to work with the baby Blackhawks.

University of Denver head coach David Carle feels like the ideal choice given his winning titles background at the NCAA level and the World Juniors.

If he decides to stay at the college level or pursue a different NHL job, it could not hurt the Blackhawks to talk with Yawney about being interested in coaching the team again.

Connor Bedard is the face of the franchise, but it feels like the backbone of the next good Hawks team will be the blueline.

The Hawks are already rolling out promising youngsters in Artyom Levshunov, Alex Vlasic, Sam Rinzel, Kevin Korchinski, Ethan Del Mastro, and Wyatt Kaiser. Also, Louis Crevier and Nolan Allan have shown the might be capable productive NHL defensemen.

Connor Murphy is the only defenseman the Hawks have who was born in the 1990s and is getting playing time.

Developing defensemen takes time and patience. Yawney has a track record during his assistant stops with the San Jose Sharks, Anaheim Ducks, Edmonton Oilers, and the Los Angeles Kings.

He has been attached to Todd McLellan since the Hawks fired him, and it is one reason he is now an assistant with Detroit. He was also an assistant for Bruce Boudreau in Anaheim.

Yawney also has experience as a head coach in the AHL, so it is not like he has no experience working with talent that needs to be developed.

Some might be averse to hiring a defensive-minded head coach since it did not work out with Luke Richardson.

Yawney does at least have some NHL head coaching experience that Richardson did not have. Plus, Richardson was in the same boat as Yawney was all those years ago, since both were not given much talent to win with.

However, Richardson did have Bedard and Connor somehow regressed under Luke's leadership. It is one reason why the Blackhawks are looking for a new head coach in the offseason.

You also have to wonder why Yawney has never gotten another head coaching opportunity after having all these rave reviews as an assistant.

That is why the Blackhawks might be better served by not entertaining bringing Yawney back. However, Yawney might be a better option than what the Hawks are rolling with currently as head coach.
