The Chicago Blackhawks will be back on the practice ice this morning after having their five-game point streak snapped last night. They will get ready to start a new streak when they host the Ottawa Senators tomorrow night. Mondays are never good, but they’re even worse following a Blackhawks’ loss. Start your work week by getting caught up with some fresh Morning Chirps.

Blackhawks Chirps

  • As I do after every home game, I stopped by the CHGO Blackhawks Postgame Show on my way home from the United Center to break it down.
  • Drew Commesso bounced back on Saturday from giving nine combined goals in his previous two starts. He stopped all 38 shots he faced in a 4-0 win over the Colorado Eagles. The shutout was the seventh of his career, putting him third all-time in Rockford IceHogs franchise history.
  • On this date, 1999, Tony Amonte scored his 250th career goal in a 1-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. The shutout was Jocelyn Thibault’s 12th career shutout and his second straight against his former team.
  • In 2022, the Blackhawks lost 6-5 to the Edmonton Oilers. Patrick Kane picked up assists on goals by Jonathan Toews and Max Domi to pass Doug Weight for the fifth-most by an American-born player.
  • Blackhawks Birthday Roll Call, Oct. 27: Hugh Lehman, Brad Lauer, Sergei Samsonov, and Brandon Saad.

NHL Chirps

  • The Washington Capitals fired assistant coach Mitch Love after an NHL investigation into allegations of domestic abuse against him concluded. He has also been suspended by the league for the remainder of the 2026-27 season. Neither the NHL nor the Capitals commented on the details of the investigation or its findings. Love was reported to be a finalist for multiple head-coaching vacancies this past summer, including the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Seattle Kraken.
  • Staying with the Caps, Dylan Strome suffered a lower-body injury during the first period of Saturday's 7-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators. Head coach Spencer Carbury didn’t have any specifics, but called the injury “concerning.” The Capitals return to practice today, so there should be an update on his condition. Strome has two goals and 10 points in nine games before the injury.
  • Patrick Kane has missed the last three games for the Detroit Red Wings after a hard fall into the boards against the Tampa Bay Lightning last night. According to head coach Todd McLellan, he won’t travel with the team to start their upcoming five-game road trip, but he could join the team before it’s over.
  • Penguins forward Rickard Rakell underwent surgery on his left hand. He’s expected to miss the next 6-8 weeks. He suffered the injury during Saturday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets when he was hit by a puck on the hand. Pittsburgh has been a surprise team early in the season, thanks, in part, to Rakell’s three goals and eight points in the first nine games.
  • Michael Misa scored his first NHL goal in the San Jose Sharks’ 6-5 overtime win over the Minnesota Wild. The Sharks can certainly score goals, but they still haven’t figured out how to keep the puck out of their own net.
  • NHL Birthday Roll Call, Oct. 27: Brian McLellan, Paul Broten, Mike Ricci, Toby Petersen, Christ Bulter, Ramus Ristolainen, Leon Draisaitl, Rasmus Andersson, and Dawson Mercer.
