- The Chicago Blackhawks are off today after a crazy game last night. They will be back in action tomorrow night against the Utah Mammoth. The Rockford IceHogs got their season started with a big victory, while Saturday was a very newsworthy day for National Hockey League defensemen.
Blackhawks Chirps
- The Blackhawks had far too many penalties last night against the Montreal Canadiens, but they showed a ton of spirit. There are many positive signs to be encouraged about after three games, and the results will come.
- We had a lot to talk about on the CHGO Blackhawks Postgame Show last night after the wild night at the United Center.
- The IceHogs opened the season with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Milwaukee Admirals. It was a big night for the prospects. Kevin Korchinski set up the game’s opening goal, while Aidan Thompson and Ethan Del Mastro assisted on the game-tying goal and Samuel Savoie’s game-winner in overtime. Drew Commesso was solid in net with 35 saves.
- Speaking of the IceHogs, Todd Welter highlighted 10 key players to watch during this important season in Rockford.
- Before last night's game, the team named Jeremy Roenick and Pat Foley as the two newest Blackhawks Ambassadors. They join Chris Chelios, Troy Murray, and Denis Savard as “representatives of the Chicago Blackhawks organization at fan, partner, and community engagements.”
- On this date in 1991, Michel Goulet played in his 900th career game as the Blackhawks beat the Washington Capitals 7-2. He was one of seven different goal scorers that night, with Steve Smith, Mike Hudson, Steve Thomas, Roenick, Brian Noonan, and Adam Creighton all finding the back of the net.
- Blackhawks Birthday Roll Call, Oct. 12: Carl Soderberg, Jacob Nilsson, Jake McCabe, and Philipp Kurashev.
NHL Chirps
- The Winnipeg Jets are dealing with multiple injuries on their blue line. Dylan Samberg won’t return to the lineup until November, and now Haydn Fleury is going to miss some time. Fleury suffered a lower-body injury against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday by taking a puck off the side of the knee. He’ll be evaluated further today.
- The Colorado Avalanche will be without the services of defenseman Samuel Girard, as he’s considered week-to-week with an upper-body injury.
- The injuries continue to mount for the Florida Panthers. Add defenseman Dmitry Kulikov to the infirmary. He was placed on injured reserve and could be out for the long term.
- Quinn Hughes picked up an assist in the Vancouver Canucks’ 3-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers. The helper was the 410th point of his career, making him the highest-scoring defenseman in franchise history. The previous record holder, Alexander Edler, had 409 points in 925 games. Hughes needed only 435 games to pass him up.
- Two highly-touted defensive prospects, Zeev Buium and Matthew Schaefer, scored their first career NHL goals last night.
