Patrick Kane is returning to the Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks are proving what was once old can be new again. They signed Patrick Kane to a two-year, $16 million contract this morning. He’ll return to the franchise where he became a hockey icon, winning a Calder Trophy, Conn Smythe Trophy, Hart Trophy, and three Stanley Cups.

“Day in and day out for 16 seasons, Patrick captivated the city of Chicago with his dazzling skill, creating some of the most memorable moments in Blackhawks history as he helped bring our storied franchise back to the pinnacle of our sport,” general manager Kyle Davidson said in an official statement. “He’s shown on countless occasions that he knows what it takes to win at the highest levels, and we couldn’t be prouder for Patrick to once again call the United Center home and continue to shine in Chicago’s brightest lights.”

The rumblings of a possible reunion started early in the offseason and grew louder over the past few weeks. Last week, Chris Chelios told 104.3 The Score that Kane told him his next destination was between the Blackhawks and the Buffalo Sabres.

The $8 million cap hit is an overpay, but that is the situation the Blackhawks are in if they want to attract a player like Kane. You had to entice him away from playing for his hometown team, who just returned to the playoffs last year. The extra year and the bigger salary did that. However, the Blackhawks are in no salary cap danger for the next two seasons, so they can afford to do that.

Kane may not be as dynamic as he was during his glory days with the team, but he instantly makes this team better. He still produced at a high level with the Detroit Red Wings last season and will take a ton of pressure off the young forwards, especially while Connor Bedard is out of action for the first few weeks.
