Patrick Kane begins his second stint with the Blackhawks at the United Center on Tuesday night against the St. Louis Blues. Over his illustrious career, Kane has scored many significant and highlight-reel goals in front of the Chicago crowd. Below, we take a look at the top five goals of his United Center career, and hopefully we get a few more of these goals and celebrations before he hangs up his skates.
5. First career goal
Patrick Kane scored his first career goal on October 19, 2007. This capped a multi-point game for Kane, who also notched two assists as the Blackhawks beat the Avalanche 5-3. The slick wrist shot was the first of many for the young American superstar. He highlighted his speed, confidence, and soft hands as he was able to elevate the puck over Avalanche goaltender Jose Theodore. Later that year, he went on to win the Calder Trophy as the best rookie player in the NHL.
4. Horizontal Kane scores while being tripped
On November 13, 2016, Patrick Kane scored one of the most athletic goals that one will ever see. Kane picked up the puck along the boards in the offensive zone and skated towards the center of the ice, deking between Canadiens Jeff Petry and Max Pacioretty. As he was being pulled to the ice, Kane lifted a shot over the glove of Al Montoya to give the Blackhawks the lead and the eventual game-winning goal.
3. Backhand magic propels Blackhawks to playoff victory
During the dynasty era, the Blackhawks met the Minnesota Wild often in the playoffs (much to their dismay). However, this game was defined by Kane's famous backhand top-shelf shot. May 2, 2014, was the first game of the second round between the division foes, and the game was tied before Kane took over. As he entered the zone, he seemingly lulled the Wild defensemen to sleep before going around Jonas Brodin to lift a backhand shot over the shoulder of Ilya Bryzgalov to break the tie.
Kane would go on to add a second goal to provide insurance as the Blackhawks would take game one by a score of 5-2. As a result of Kane's overtime heroics in game six, the Blackhawks went on to win the series.
2. Stanley Cup insurance goal secures his third title
Over his career, Patrick Kane has had a knack for scoring clutch goals (i.e., the 2010 Stanley Cup overtime winner). On June 15, 2015, Kane's goal helped secure a Stanley Cup victory on home ice for the first time since 1938. Earlier in the game, Kane's patience and assist led to Duncan Keith's goal that gave the lead to the Blackhawks.
As he was coming down the ice on the two-on-one with Brad Richards, the entire stadium rose to their feet. We knew that if Richards was to get Kane the puck, then the team would have essentially won their third cup in six years.
1. Overtime game-winning goal to lead to the Stanley Cup Final
Patrick Kane's best goal scored in the United Center occurred in the Western Conference Final versus the Los Angeles Kings. The Blackhawks had a 3-1 series lead, and the Kings tied the game with only seconds remaining in game five. In double overtime, the Blackhawks came down the ice on another two-on-one, this time with captain Jonathan Toews. He fed Kane a pass, which was one-timed into the back of the net to secure a Stanley Cup Final berth.
This goal caused one of the loudest crowd pops at the United Center and was the origin of Kane's famous "heartbreaker" celebration. Kane's hat-trick goal sent the Blackhawks to face the Boston Bruins and ultimately claim their second title in four years.
I have had so many great hockey memories with my family and friends growing up, and many of those are due to these goals from Patrick Kane. I can speak for the rest of the Blackhawks fanbase by saying that we are ready for more "Showtime".
