When is the 2025 Winter Classic? Location, venue, how to watch, everything you need to know

Plans for the 2025 Winter Classic have commenced, and yesterday, we learned that the Chicago Blackhawks will face the St. Louis Blues in the big game. This will be a matchup featuring a pair of historic franchises and division rivals, so it is a surefire bet that we will see a memorable outing. 

The Blackhawks are no stranger to outdoor hockey games, having played in such events six times in the past. But unfortunately for Chicago, they haven’t fared well in such contests, boasting a paltry 1-5-0 record. But with Connor Bedard bringing in a new era, perhaps their luck will change next season. 

Where is the 2025 Winter Classic?

The 2025 Winter Classic will take place in Chicago, Illinois, marking the second time the city has hosted the event. We last saw the Blackhawks hosting the big game in 2019 vs. the Boston Bruins, but that event occurred at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana. However, the city itself saw the Winter Classic way back in 2009 when the Blackhawks faced the Detroit Red Wings.

What venue is hosting the 2025 Winter Classic?

If there is one thing to know about the city of Chicago, it’s that it boasts not one but two historic venues: Soldier Field and Wrigley Field. Both have hosted outdoor hockey games in the past, but in 2025, the honor goes to Wrigley Field, which also played host to the 2009 event. Back in 2014, Soldier Field was home to a Stadium Series matchup featuring the Blackhawks and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

History of the Blackhawks in the Winter Classic

The Blackhawks first appeared in the Winter Classic on January 1st, 2009, in a 6-4 loss to the Red Wings. Chicago They were a road team in the 2015 game in a 3-2 loss against the Washington Capitals at Nationals Park. 

On January 2nd, 2017, they traveled to Busch Stadium to face the Blues, but it resulted in yet another loss, this time 4-1. Their most recent appearance in the Winter Classic occurred in 2019 when they hosted the Bruins in South Bend, but they still couldn’t snag that elusive win in a 4-2 loss.
