Chicago Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson has wasted no time going from drafting additional upgrades to the club's prospect pool to upgrading the talent on the ice through free agency.
Armed with plenty of salary cap space, Davidson is coming through with his goal of raising the standards for the team. Now these signings might not be enough to get the Blackhawks back into Stanley Cup contention. This is a rebuild being done through draft and development.
The moves the Blackhawks are making are geared to at least making this team no longer a contender for the top spot in the Tankathon.com/NHL standings. Instead, these moves should get the Hawks more toward being a fringe wild-card team. Which after watching this team be awful for three seasons, being on an upward trajectory is great.
Here are the signings the Chicago Blackhawks have completed so far...
1. Tyler Bertuzzi

He signed a four-year deal with a $5.5 AAV.
2. Teuvo Teravainen

He is returning the Blackhawks!
Teuvo Teravainen, signed 3x$5.4M by CHI, is a pass-first defensive middle-six winger who kills penalties. He's not big, speedy, or physical but he contributes to the forecheck and helps his line maintain possession of the puck. #Blackhawks pic.twitter.com/PeDPZDhJZl

3. Laurent Brossoit

The Hawks brought in a backup goalie after Arvid Soderblom was so bad.

4. Alec Martinez

Major upgrade relatively speaking when you are talking about replacing Jarred Tinordi and Jaycob Megna.

The Chicago Blackhawks own free agents...
- The Blackhawks briefly had the exclusive rights to negotiate with Sam Lafferty. He is not coming back as he elected free agency and signed with Buffalo.

- Kyle Davidson only gave two qualifying offers to the team's restricted free agents. Defensemen Isaak Phillips and Louis Crevier were given offers. Joey Anderson and Taylor Raddysh are the notable RFA's to not get a qualifying offer.
- The Athletic's Scott Powers tweeted that the Hawks are still interested in bringing back Joey Anderson.
Joey Anderson is officially a free agent, but he and the Blackhawks are talking and could still get something done.

- Update: Joey Anderson has re-signed with the Blackhawks for two years and an $800k cap hit.
