The Chicago Blackhawks made the right call by naming Nick Foligno the team captain over Connor Bedard
Nick Foligno was the unofficial captain and the team's alternate. Now he is officially the team's captain.
The Chicago Blackhawks finally have an official captain and it is not Connor Bedard.
Instead of making the team's superstar the club's captain, the Hawks named veteran and unofficial team dad Nick Foligno to fill the role. The captaincy was left vacant last season after the franchise announced it was moving on from Jonathan Toews.
Naming Foligno over Bedard was the correct call.
Some might think Bedard having the "C" on his sweater would be the better move since he is the face of the franchise. People forget he is still just 19. While Toews got the captaincy at that young age, he had Patrick Kane perceived as the superstar to take away some of the spotlight.
Bedard seems mature enough to handle the bright shine of being in the spotlight, but unlike Toews, he has someone on the roster who can fill the leader role right now.
Bedard is being asked to be the team's draw and best player at such a young age. Asking him also to be the unquestioned leader is probably not proper to add to his load at this time.
Plus, this allows Foligno to continue to tutor Bedard in the leadership area rather than just be an advisor. No one has looked out for Bedard more than his figurative hockey dad. Foligno has been the perfect mentor for the budding superstar as Bedard keeps refining his game toward winning multiple Hart Trophies, and hopefully Stanley Cups.
Also, Bedard being named captain would have been forced since even he knows Foligno has been the captain without the title since joining the team. All this announcement was giving Nick the title officially.
This is an authentic move made by the franchise. While Foligno's role will likely be reduced to skating on the fourth line, his value is continuing to help head coach Luke Richardson install the proper culture that once this rebuild is completed, will help get the Blackhawks back in title contention.
Plus, Foligno can still provide some offense when asked. It is just that time has caught up with him where he is no longer a forward you want on the top line consistently.
Time in the league is more valuable in this instance to have Foligno be the captain right now as Bedard works to make the future brighter.
