Connor Bedard could get to this Elite Milestone in the Season Finale
Tomorrow night the Chicago Blackhawks will be in Los Angeles to take on the Kings in game 82. While the year has gone as expected for most (record wise) it's been Connor Bedard that has the league's attention. The 18 year old rookie, with a deceptive and creative shot, has impressed in one area not much focused on before the season: his passing.
Bedard currently has 39 assists and with another "apple" could net 40 assists in his first ever season. Some other notable rookies that have also started their careers with 39 assists include Joe Sakic, Luc Robitaille, William Nylander, and Nathan MacKinnon.
If he would be able to get #40 he would join a group of 79 (including Bedard) players in the history of the NHL. The great Peter Stastny has the record for assists by a rookie with 70 helpers in the 1980-1981 season for the Nordiques. Amongst current players, Sidney Crosby and Matt Barzal both had 63 assists and Patrick Kane had 51in his first season (2007-2008 season).
With a long off season ahead (no playoffs after all) it's safe to presume that Connor Bedard will quickly be on the ice and in the gym working on various parts of his overall game. One such skill trait, that of passing, is going to get better as the roster improves. This presumption has fans around the world excited for what is to come. With the drafting of another top 4 pick this June, the roster could again be bolstered with young talent quickly to help Connor Bedard continue to lead Chicago statistically.
