With our next instalment of Meet The Prospects, we have arguably one of the best goalie prospects in the NHL, 20 year old Drew Commesso. Commesso stands 6’2, weighs 181 pounds and was born in Norwell, USA. Commesso made a name for himself playing in the US National Development program before joining Boston University in the NCAA.
The Blackhawks selected Commesso 46th overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, and have been extremely patient with his development. Next season, Commesso is committed to playing another year in the NCAA where he will likely start every game and lead Boston University in net. In 28 games last season, he posted a 2.52GAA and a .914SV%, so I’m looking for him to match, or do a bit better this upcoming year.
Commesso has been praised for playing an aggressive style, but doing a great job of being able to read traffic and never giving up on a play. It’s obvious he doesn’t lack the confidence in net, and rarely gets caught moving across his crease. I’d say within a couple seasons, Commesso will be ready to take on the NHL and compete for a starter position soon after.
I like Commesso a lot, he’s probably one of, if not my favorite Blackhawks prospect. He’s fun to watch because he can steal games for his team single handedly, and seems to always find a way to make saves when they look unstoppable. His athleticism is impressive for a guy with his size and he utilizes every strength he has to a tee. I think during the 2023-24 season, Commesso is starting in Rockford, and playing in the NHL by the 2024-25 season. The jump from NCAA to the NHL is massive, but the Hawks are in no rush for him to get better. A slow, proper rise up the charts is what’s going to be best for him and the team in the long run.
