Predicting the 2024-2025 NHL Standings and where the Chicago Blackhawks might fall

The Chicago Blackhawks will certainly have their work cut out for them as they begin their slow ascent back to the top of the NHL hierarchy. This season should mark the first step in the right direction, however, as GM Kyle Davidson has drastically improved this team on paper. Now all that's left is to see just how much the team will improve in the final standings.

The Chicago Blackhawks finished last season with a pathetic 52 points in 82 games, and in last place in the Central Division.

This season the team will hope for several things to fall into place.

For one, the team is banking on a monstrous season from Connor Bedard. While placing such high expectations on a 19-year-old in his second season is unfair, Bedard is in the class of greats like Crosby, McDavid, and Ovechkin. Therefore, he is expected to be a point-per-game player at a minimum and win games for this team.

The Hawks also hope that the depth and top end talent they added this offseason will translate to actual wins in the regular season.

They clearly believe that the team they have constructed this season is far more competitive and veteran laden than was the squad last season.

If these two bets pay off, the Hawks should see a significant bump in their win total, and thus a steady climb in the standings.

So how exactly will the standings shape up? And how will the full league look when all 84 (yep, they added two games... I forgot too. Don't sweat it) games have been played? Let's get to some bold Season Standings predictions.

Atlantic Division

1) Boston Bruins (Playoffs)

2) Toronto Maple Leafs (Playoffs)

3) Florida Panthers (Playoffs)

4) Detroit Red Wings (Playoffs)

5) Buffalo Sabres

6) Tampa Bay LIghtning

7) Ottawa Senators

8) Montreal Canadiens

The thinking here is pretty simple. If Jeremy Swayman re-signs, I think Boston will be a complete force in the Atlantic. They have depth, top end talent on offense and defense, toughness, size, great goaltending (if Swayman re-signs). What's not to love?

In the middle, the most shocking omission from the playoff picture will certainly be Tampa Bay. They have been as consistent a regular season juggernaut as can be found over the past few years but I feel shaky about them.

For one, they lost their captain and their number two defenseman this offseason. Those wounds will sting for quite some time, even with the addition of Jake Guentzel.

They are now completely dependent upon an elite (and healthy) season from an aging Victor Hedman, and an oft injured Nikita Kucherov to stay afloat in this seriously tough division. Meanwhile, young and hungry teams like Detroit and Buffalo are desperate to take the jump to the playoffs.

I think this is the season Detroit will finally break through as they've been knocking on the door the past few seasons. They added Tarasenko in the offseason and somewhat surprisingly re-signed Patrick Kane. I like their defense a lot and their depth and scoring ability is great. Their goaltending will again be their big weakness.

At the Bottom of the division I sadly must project the Senators and Canadiens. I really feel for Senators fans, as this team feels mired in the mud. I don't see how they break through, even after adding Linus Ullmark. They just feel like a mediocre team again. As for the Canadiens, God-Almighty the Patrick Laine and David Reinbacher injuries are so brutal. This team just can't seem to stay healthy and I think it will cost them another season.

Metropolitan Division

1) New Jersey Devils (Playoffs)

2) New York Rangers (Playoffs)

3) Carolina Hurricanes (Playoffs)

4) New York Islanders (Playoffs)

5) Pittsburh Penguins

6) Philadelphia Flyers

7) Washington Capitals

8) Columbus Blue Jackets

I expect the New Jersey Devils to rise substantially this season. They added great pieces this offseason like Brett Pesce on Defense, and Jacob Markstrom in net.

The most significant improvement in my opinion, is the addition of Sheldon Keefe as their head coach. Now, I'm not a fan of Keefe as a playoff coach... but regular season? Oh, he's gonna kill it. I think the Devils will be this year's Vancouver Canucks. They will start hot and stay hot, and by the end of the season they will be a sexy pick to win the cup.

The rest of the division isn't too surprising. Maybe the only surprise is how low I have the Washington Capitals. However honestly, they really shouldn't be taken too seriously.

They were lucky to make the playoffs last year and the difference between fourth place and sixth was about 2 points in the standings. I know they added a ton this offseason (Matt Roy, Logan Thompson, and most notably Pierre-Luc Dubois) but is it enough to secure a playoff spot? They are making a massive bet on Dubois helping them to score more goals, as last season this team struggled mightily to score.

This brings me to my last point. No disrespect to the all-time legend, Alex Ovechkin.... but his playoff performance last season was shameful.

He gave almost zero effort and was clearly not interested in being there. It was as damning a playoff appearance as I've ever seen in hockey. I hate to say it, but I think he mostly cares about catching Gretzky's goal record this year (he is around 40 goals away currently). That isn't a recipe for team success.

Also, a small note here... Columbus, I am rooting hard for you! The whole hockey world joins you in mourning for Johnny Gaudreau, and I seriously hope that this season is a good celebration of his life and impact on the game of hockey.

Pacific Division

1) Edmonton Oilers (Playoffs)

2) Las Vegas Golden Knights (Playoffs)

3) Vancouver Canucks (Playoffs)

4) Anaheim Ducks

5) Los Angeles Kings

6) Seattle Kraken

7) Calgary Flames

8) San Jose Sharks

The Oilers are so darn good. Not only do they have the greatest player on earth, (and possibly the second best player on earth depending upon who you ask), but they have elite scorers alongside those guys, they have depth, and goaltending. I love this team for this season and I think the sky's the limit for them.

I know... The ducks at fourth is a VERY bold prediction but that is why this is fun! My logic here is that every season there is a team that shockingly overperforms. I think with the glut of young talent that the Ducks have, it has to eventually work out for them. Why not this season? I see the ducks being a surprisingly sound team defensively and a team with the high end talent to score a lot of goals. If John Gibson can have a bounce back season, the ducks should be a good team.

There are no surprises at the bottom of this division as the Kraken are just one of those "meh" teams that is okay, not great, but okay. The Flames and Sharks are rebuilding and sadly I think both are in for rough seasons in terms of wins and points.

Central Division

1) Nashville Predators (Playoffs)

2) Dallas Stars (Playoffs)

3)Colorado Avalanche (Playoffs)

4) Utah Yeti (Just accept it already) (Playoffs)

5)Winnipeg Jets (Playoffs)

6)Chicago Blackhawks

7)Minnesota Wild

8) St. Louis Blues

It pains me to admit this... But the good for nothing Nashville Predators are going to be an absolute juggernaut this season. I hate this team with a burning passion.. and yet I love what they've built. This is a team poised to win now, and they have the horses to do it. Adding BOTH Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault is unbelievable GM work by Barry Trotz.

Add to that the fact that Nashville already had a very competent group of forwards lead by the ever underrated Filip Forsberg and Ryan O'reilly. Add to that the fact that they already had Roman Josi and they added Brady Skjei on defense. Add to that the fact that they have Juuse Saros in net.... *sigh* They are a terrific team, and one that I think will easily compete to win this division.

The Stars and Avs are still excellent so I kept them around where they were last year. However, I bumped Utah up to fourth in the division. I think this is the season that we see this team make the playoffs.

They have subtely been a solid team the past two seasons and I think they addressed a massive need by adding Sergachev from Tampa in the offseason. I expect Logan Cooley and Dylan Guenther to take the next step and I see them improving drastically.

Now for the moment you've all been waiting for... I have the Chicago Blackhawks finishing sixth in the division and missing the playoffs.

I know it may seem like a bummer, but honestly, this would be a massive improvement. Remember that last season the Hawks finished with 52 points and scored the least amount of goals by any team in the league. I expect both of those things to improve substantially.

With the additions of Taylor Hall, Teavo Teravainen, and Tyler Bertuzzi, this team suddenly has a very competent NHL top 6 forwards. Add to that the fact that Bedard should be even better as a sophomore and this team could surprise some people. I still think the rebuild has a long way to go, but adding so many veterans to insulate Connor Bedard, should at the very least raise the floor on this team.

Not to mention that by adding an elite backup goalie in Laurent Broissoit, the Hawks have ensured that they will be competitive in almost every game they play this year. I love the direction that this team is going in, and I'm so excited for the future!

At the bottom of the division are two teams that just feel stuck in no man's land to me. I don't see either of these teams being bad necessarily, but I don't see them being good either. I think they both will have tough seasons which will result in serious discussions of whether it is time for a rebuild. I think personally St. Louis has been overdue for a rebuild for several years now. This season may well expose that fact.

So what do you think? Do you have the Hawks finishing higher or lower than I do? And how do you think the rest of the standings will shake out? Hockey season is almost here and I couldn't be more excited to see what happens!
