As expected, on Thursday the Chicago Bears selected highly touted Quarterback Caleb Williams from USC with the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. This would come around ten months after the Chicago Blackhawks would select Connor Bedard first overall in the 2023 NHL Draft. This is quite uncommon and more so to the genreal beleif that both players are viewed as franchise changing talents.
Connor Bedard has one of the most decorated juniors careers of all time and has brought new fans to the game of hockey through highlight plays, a congenial demeanor, as well as being placed (luckily) in an orginal six franchise market. Having just finished a successful rookie season (61 points) Bedard has Blackhawks' fans worldwide excited about his and the teams' development moving forward.
Caleb Williams, after transferring from Oklahoma, threw for over eight thousand yards while accounting for nearly a hundred touchdowns in just two seasons playing for the Trojans. These type of numbers and the way he throws the ball would have likely made Williams the first overall pick in each of the past two years had he been eligible.
Not only his play has the city of Chicago excited though, Williams is charismatic and has a flare to him as a prominent athlete that is rarely seen. The city of Chicago is now a city that is dominated (sports talk wise) by Connor Bedard and Caleb Williams.
While the Bulls (NBA) try and pick a direction (rebuild or retool), the baseball teams look to compete (Cubs more than the White Sox these days) in a crowded field, and the secondary market sports try and hold on to ticket buyers and the city headlines, one thing is now certain:
That the Caleb Williams and Connor Bedard era of sports in Chicago is now here. Let's enjoy it!
