The Chicago Blackhawks dropped their third consecutive game and fourth in their last five, losing 5-2 to the Calgary Flames on Monday night. The Blackhawks fell to 14-28-2 of the season following the defeat. Goaltender Petr Mrazek made 31 saves in the loss.
Calgary Flames rookie Rory Kerins also made his NHL debut and notched two assists.
The Flames took control in the first period.
Jakob Pelletier opened the scoring just 1:14 in the first period, netting his second goal of the season to give the Flames a 1-0 lead, with a wrist shot from the right circle that slipped through the legs of Blackhawks defenseman Seth Jones. Kerins recorded his first NHL point on the play.
Chicago answered back as Louis Crevier tied the game up at one just 1:24 later, for his second NHL goal.
Pelletier scored again for Calgary for his second of the night and third season on the rebound off of the shot from Kevin Bahl. Kernis picked up his second NHL point.
The Blackhawks defense failed on the play, with Wyatt Kaiser unable to deny the rebound opportunity as Pelletier buried the puck in the crease.
Flames captain Mikael Backlund made it 3-1 with a tip-in goal off a Matt Coronato shot. Chicago's defensive struggles continued as Seth Jones failed to disrupt the play.
Calgary held the two-goal lead after twenty minutes of play.
The Flames pulled away in the second period.
Less then two minutes into the second period, Jake Bean extended Calgary's lead to 4-1, capitalizing on a rebound after a Yegor Sharangovich shot bounced off the end boards.
Connor Bedard cut the lead to two on a powerplay goal, earning his 100th NHL point on the play. He is the 24th teenager in NHL history to reach the milestone.
However, Chicago wouldn't celebrate too long. Just over two minutes later, Sharangovich scored a short-handed goal off of a Seth Jones turnover near the neutral zone, restoring Calgary's three-goal cushion. The Flames led 5-2 after two periods.
Neither team scored in the third period but Calgary outshot Chicago 10-8 in the frame and 36-25 overall.
Key Moment: Bedard's Milestone Night
Despite the loss, Bedard's powerplay goal in the second period marked a tremendous moment in his early career, as he reached 100 career NHL points in just 112 games.
