The Chicago Blackhawks may have found their goalie tandem in Arvid Soderblom and Spencer Knight. Knight, along with a 2027 first-round pick, was acquired in a trade with the Blackhawks on Saturday for Seth Jones and a 2026 fourth-round pick.

In his Blackhawks debut Monday, he put on a clinic, stopping 41 of 42 shots in Chicago's 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings.

Goaltending has been a concern for the Blackhawks not just this season, but over the past two or three years. Now with Knight in the mix, they may have found some stability in net.

However, the addition of Knight creates a logjam in the crease.

The Blackhawks now have four goaltenders on their roster: Petr Mrazek, Arvid Soderblom, Spencer Knight, and Laurent Brossoit, who remains on injured reserve and has yet to play a game this season.

With the trade deadline happening Friday, Blackhawks fans are wondering: "What's next for the Blackhawks goaltending situation?"

New Goalie Tandem in the Crease?

Before Spencer Knight joined the Blackhawks, Chicago relied on Arvid Soderblom and Petr Mrazek to hold the fort in the crease.

Soderblom has shown potential while Mrazek's has struggled. As Chicago looks towards the future, the Knight-Soderblom tandem could be the answer for the Blackhawks goaltending all along.

Knight, 23, was selected 13th overall by Florida in the 2019 NHL Draft. He was viewed as the Panthers future goaltender, but that has changed plans. A fresh start in Chicago can rejuevenate his potential.

Soderblom, 25, has had an inconsistent season but if he can develop chemistry with Spencer Knight in net, Chicago can be a competitive team again once the playoffs roll around.

What's Next for Petr Mrazek?

Mrazek, 33, has struggled this season, posting a 10-19-2 record with 3.46 goals-against average and a .890%. He has lost three of his last five starts.

Chicago could potentially trade Mrazek at the deadline. Teams like the Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks, and Detroit Red Wings, can be a great fit for Mrazek.

Moving Mrazek at the deadline for a draft pick, prospect, or another young player is a great idea for Chicago.

Where does Laurent Brossoit fit in?

Brossoit has yet to play a game for the Blackhawks this season due to injury. If and when he returns, the Blackhawks would have a big decision to make. Do they keep Brossoit to be a mentor to Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom? Or do they trade him either at the deadline or in the offseason?

According to Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson in a press conference interview back in January, he said he was "hopeful' that Brossoit can return this season. However, with no official timetable for his return, his role remains unclear.

If they trade him at the deadline, he could draw interest from a few teams who need a veteran goalie. However, his injury history might play a role in this scenario.

The Road Ahead

With Knight now in the fold, the Blackhawks goaltending has a lot of questions in store:

  • Can he maintain his level of play?
  • Could Soderblom be the starting goaltender?
  • Will Mrazek or Brossoit be traded at the deadline?
  • Will both Mrazek and Brossoit be traded at the deadline?
  • What does GM Kyle Davidson do with the Hawks goaltending in the offseason?

One thing is certain: The Blackhawks found of what could be an intriguing duo in net with Knight and Soderblom. In a season filled with struggles and growing pains, it's a step in the right direction.
