Yesterday marked the beginning of one of the best tournaments in all of hockey, the World Juniors Ice Hockey Championships. The top under-20 players from across the world will be competing for the gold medal and international bragging rights for the next calendar year.
The World Juniors take on an outsized importance for fans of struggling NHL teams like the Chicago Blackhawks as they offer a glimpse at some of their top prospects’ development.
This year the Hawks have two prospects competing in the tournament, USA’s Oliver Moore and Czechia’s Jiri Felcman.
Moore, 19, was selected 19th overall in 2023 by Chicago. This season he has tallied five goals and 17 points in 20 games for the University of Minnesota. This will be his second World Juniors appearance and he will be a leader for a talented US squad seeking its second straight gold medal.
Felcman, also 19, was selected 93rd overall in 2023 by the Hawks. He is currently playing for the SCL Tigers in the top Swiss league and has posted seven assists in 26 games. This is Felcman’s first World Juniors appearance, and the Hawks are hoping the 6’4” forward can find some more offense over the next two weeks.
Hawks fans can watch the two prospects play on NHL Network in the US or TSN in Canada.
