Why a hot start is crucial for Roman Kantserov in Chicago

The Chicago Blackhawks haven't had a 50-goal scorer since Jeremey Roenick in the 1992-93 season, and they haven't had a No. 1 sniper for years. Last season, Tyler Bertuzzi led the team in goals with 32, but there is a new kid on the block who could make an instant impact.

Roman Kantserov, a former second-round pick in 2023, joins Chicago this year, and as a highly touted goal scorer, it's vital he gets off to a successful start.

What stands out about Kantserov?

Ever since Kantserov was drafted into the NHL, his game over in Russia has elevated to new levels, and he looks like one of the hottest prospects for the upcoming season. He was once described as a very smart skater and an elite playmaker, but in recent years he has taken his goal-scoring game to another level. The 21-year-old scored 36 goals in the KHL last season, and it would be handy if he got off to a flyer in Chicago.

During the rebuild phase the Blackhawks have faced over the last couple of years, a clear void has been a true No. 1 goal scorer, meaning the pressure is on for Kantserov. Having been given time to up his game in a competitive and physical league like the KHL, it's likely that he won't take long to adapt to the speed of the NHL and get on the board pretty quickly.

In Chicago's case, Kantserov flying out of the gates and becoming a dangerous threat in front of the net is exactly what they want. With Connor Bedard looking unlikely to make the start of the season with an injury, Kantserov may be looked at as one of the key targets to get pucks on goal, and his time in Russia suggests he has no issue finding the back of the net.

For Chicago, a relentless and consistent goal threat on the ice has been a big miss over the years, and having a guy as keen on goals as Kantserov is perfect for their development as a team.

With everything Kantserov has shown in Russia, and with how highly spoken about he is, there is bound to be some expectation and burden on his head, and for him, the team, and the fans, it's crucial he makes a hot start.

There certainly isn't any expectation for him to step straight in and be a 50-goal guy, but there is some expectation for goals given what he has shown so far.

Where does he fit into the lineup?

The Blackhawks aren't likely to just ease Kantserov into contention, bidding to earn his place in the lineup; it looks like he is a top-six certainty. He is likely to have some big weight on his shoulders, but any instant impact may begin to bring some excitement to the lineup. However, some early struggles could mean a repeat of last season for Chicago.

Being paired up with fellow rookie Anton Frondell may be even better for his start in the league, starting alongside an elite playmaker who is always making goals happen. Frondell showed early in his NHL career that he has vision for goals and can put the puck in really dangerous areas for his linemates. It's something that will look to be a massive advantage to Kantserov on the wing.

He was a goal-scoring machine in what is considered one of the toughest leagues in world hockey. He comes with a reputation and some excitement, but he needs to get off to a quick start. Otherwise, it may be another miserable search for a 30-40 goal scorer for the Blackhawks.
