I don’t know about you, but I need a nice and quiet Sunday after a busy NHL Draft weekend. So, refill your coffee mug and enjoy today’s Morning Chirps.

Blackhawks Chirps

  • Kyle Davidson didn’t make a pick in the first round on Friday night, but he came back on Saturday with two big swings in the second round. Defenseman Xavier Villeneuve and forward Ryan Roobroeck have first-round talent but slipped into the second. These are both high-risk/high-reward picks, and could turn into real steals.
  • I joined the CHGO Blackhawks Podcast to put a bow on the weekend and break down the 2026 draft class.
  • The next order of business will be next week’s development camp, which returns to the ice this year. The Blackhawks have released the schedule and roster for next week’s camp. Blackhawks Birthday Roll Call, June 28: George Gee.

NHL Chirps

  • Late in the sixth round, the Carolina Hurricanes traded the 192nd pick and defensive prospect Kyle Masters to the Anaheim Ducks for John Carlson’s negotiation rights. Chris Johnston reported that there is no pre-arranged deal between the Hurricanes and the veteran blueliner, but the Stanley Cup champs wanted the first crack at negotiating with Carlson.
  • Los Angeles Kings general manager Ken Holland will not discuss a contract extension with Drew Doughty during the season. The future Hall of Fame defenseman is entering the final year of his contract, and the Kings will wait until after the season to revisit his future.
  • The St. Louis Blues pulled off another trade on Saturday, acquiring defenseman Brandon Carlo from the Toronto Maple Leafs for two third-round picks. The Maple Leafs took a big loss on this one, as they traded Fraser Mitten, a first-round and fourth-round pick, for Carlo at the 2025 trade deadline.
  • Seth Jarvis was playing with an injured shoulder, which explains his struggles to produce during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Hurricanes announced that Jarvis will be out 4-6 months after undergoing shoulder surgery. The earliest he could return is still a month into the regular season.
  • The Colorado Avalanche and Boston Bruins swapped former top prospects, with Ivan Ivan going to Bean Town for former first-round pick Fabian Lysell. This move gives both players who couldn’t cement an NHL role a fresh start with a new team.
  • NHL Birthday Roll Call, June 28: Jim Watson, Roland Melanson, Brad Larsen, Rick Jackman, Joel Edmundson, and Cole Hutson.
