Saturday was a busy day at the IIHF World Championship, so before you head out to your Memorial Day BBQ, get caught up with some Morning Chirps.

Blackhawks Chirps

  • Frondell didn’t play in Sweden’s 3-2 loss to Norway. Arvid Soderblom only faced 14 shots, but allowed three goals for his first loss of the tournament. Top draft prospect Ivar Stenberg scored this great goal by batting the puck out of midair.
  • Moore had an eventful game in Team USA’s 4-2 loss to Latvia. In addition to leaving the game after a hard hit and returning, he picked up the primary assist on Matthew Tkachuk’s goal.
  • Former Blackhawks forward Lukas Reichel scored in Germany’s 6-2 win over Austria.
  • In other World Championship action, Denmark shut out Slovenia 4-0, Switzerland crushed Hungary 9-0, and Czechia beat Slovakia 3-2.
  • On this date in 2009, the Detroit Red Wings grabbed a 3-1 series lead in the Western Conference Finals by beating the Blackhawks 6-1. Marian Hossa had two goals and an assist against his future team, while Jonathan Toews scored the lone Blackhawks’ goal.
  • Blackhawks Birthday Roll Call, May 24: Lionel Conacher, Norm Locking, Dan Hinton, Jonathan Aitken, Artem Anisimov, Viktor Svedberg, and Pius Suter.

NHL Chirps

  • A home team has finally won in a Conference Final as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 in overtime. After Eric Robinson scored the opening goal, Nikolaj Ehlers scored in the second period and again in overtime. Josh Anderson had both goals for the Canadiens. The Hurricanes figured out their defense, holding the Canadiens to only 12 shots on goal. They had five through the first 40 minutes and none in overtime. The series shifts to Montreal for Game 3, tied 1-1.
  • The St. Louis Blues have three first-round picks next month, with the highest coming at 11. According to Darren Dreger, they are looking to move up even higher. He mentioned that the San Jose Sharks could be a good partner as they might be willing to trade down. If the Blues jump up to the second pick, the chances of Stenberg slipping to the Blackhawks become smaller, as his brother Otto plays in St. Louis.
  • Bruce Garrioch says the Ottawa Senators are looking to bring in a backup goaltender from outside the organization. He mentioned that they could target Stuart Skinner in free agency. This will be an interesting situation to monitor in case they go the trade route. If the Blackhawks believe Drew Commesso is ready for the NHL, they could see whether the Senators are interested in Soderblom.
  • NHL Birthday Roll Call, May 24: Merlyn Phillips, Bruce Gamble, Kent-Erik Andersson, Pat Verbeek, Kris Draper, Ville Peltonen, Vladimir Orszagh, Guillaume Latendresse, Mattias Ekholm, Cody Eakin, and Simon Holmstrom.
