The 2025-26 Chicago Blackhawks season officially begins today. They will have their full roster intact when they take the ice today, thanks to one last order of business taken care of by general manager Kyle Davidson last night. Enjoy the first batch of Morning Chirps of the new season!
Blackhawks Chirps
- 'Twas the night before training camp, and all through the rink, a defense was signing his contract on paper with ink. Last night, Wyatt Kaiser agreed to a new two-year, $3.4 million contract. The 23-year-old blueliner had four goals and eight points in 57 NHL games last season. A holdout would have made no sense for Kaiser with all the competition among the young defensemen. Two years is a long time on a rebuilding team. We will have a much better idea of where this core stands then and how Kaiser fits into it. He’ll still be a restricted free agent when this deal ends.
- The Blackhawks are taking to the ice today for their first sessions of training camp. There is still a lot to be decided between now and the season opener on Oct. 7. I filled you in on what position battles I’ll be focusing on over the next two and a half weeks.
- Ty Glenn took a look into the Blackhawks’ deep prospect pool and came up with five youngsters who should get some NHL playing time this season.
- My friends at Chicago Hockey Radio had me on yesterday, and we discussed all the the major storylines heading into training camp. Please subscribe to their page while giving it a listen.
- On this date in 2024, Nick Foligno was named the 36th captain in franchise history. He will wear the C on his sweater again this season.
- Blackhawks Birthday Roll Call, Sept. 18: Bill Dineen, Ralph Backstrom, and Lasse Kukkonen.
NHL Chirps
- Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill said contract extension negotiations with Jason Robertson are “at a standstill.” The 26-year-old is entering the final year of his contract after scoring 35 goals and 80 points in 82 games last season. He will still be a restricted free agent, so the Stars are in no danger of losing him for nothing. However, if he does hit the trade market, the Blackhawks should be very interested.
- Montreal Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis told reporters he views Kirby Dach as the team’s second-line center heading into training camp.
- Edmonton Oilers forward Zach Hyman will not be ready for the start of training camp, as he’s still recovering from a wrist injury suffered during the playoffs. He did not give any timetable for a return.
- Calgary Flames draft pick Jack Beck will play for Arizona State this season. So, why is this in the Chirps? Well, he played professionally in the ECHL and American Hockey League last year. The NCAA used to rule any athlete ineligible once they received compensation for playing. The college landscape has changed so much over the past couple of years, and they need to sort all of it.
Why can a guy that played pro hockey last year play NCAA Hockey this year? NCAA interpretation basically. Maybe some lawsuit fear? If they view Major Junior hockey and pro hockey the "same?" Depth of talent? College Coaches aren't happy with what's happening to college athletics… https://t.co/e5V7zYjQY8
