Blackhawks Number History, 81-90

We’ve reached the penultimate post in our journey through Chicago Blackhawks numbers history. With 100 years of hockey under its belt, this franchise has so many names to mention. This series will help shed light on the lesser-known and forgotten Blackhawks. We’re featuring the best player to wear each number, as well as giving you some fun facts along the way.

No. 81 – Marian Hossa

Marian Hossa played against the Blackhawks in the 2009 Western Conference Finals and saw something that made him want to be a part of that team. When he signed in Chicago the following summer, it felt as if the final piece of the championship puzzle was in place. One of the best two-way forwards to ever play the game, Hossa added an element to the Blackhawks that made them feel invincible at times. He played eight seasons with the Blackhawks and scored 186 goals and 415 points in 534 regular-season games. He scored 21 and 73 points in 107 Stanley Cup playoff games, winning three titles. Nearly one-third of his postseason goals, six, were game-winners. Hossa was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2021. The Blackhawks made sure he’d be only No. 81 in team history by retiring his number in 2022.

Fun Fact: Jordan Oesterle was traded to the Arizona Coyotes along with Hossa’s contract in 2018.

Tomas Kopecky signed with the Blackhawks on the same day Hossa did. They were teammates with the Detroit Red Wings the previous season. He scored a career-high 10 goals during the 2009-10 season and then bested that with 15 goals the following season. He ended his two-year run in Chicago with 63 points in 155 games. He had four goals and two assists during the 2010 run to the Stanley Cup, playing in 17 games.

Fun Fact: Alexandre Fortin earned his NHL contract after an impressive performance at the 2017 development camp.

Landon Slaggert has made the most out of his opportunities. A third-round pick in 2020, he signed with the Blackhawks after his college career at Notre Dame ended in 2023. He brings the size and speed needed for an effective checking line. Slaggert has scored six goals and 17 points in 102 NHL games. It will be interesting to see where he fits in over the next year or two as more prospects graduate to the NHL level.

No 85 – Rostislav Olesz

Rostislav Olesz was acquired from the Florida Panthers in 2011 for defenseman Brian Campbell and was assigned to the Rockford IceHogs after clearing waivers. He played six games for the Blackhawks during the 2011-12 season without registering a point. The Blackhawks bought out the final year of his contract after the 2012-13 season, and he signed with the New Jersey Devils. He eventually landed in Europe, where he played professionally in various leagues until 2024.

Fun Fact: Mike Hardman’s first NHL goal came against his future teammate, Petr Mrazek.

Teuvo Teravainen was the 18th overall pick of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. He came over to North America in 2013 and made his NHL debut against the Dallas Stars on March 25, 2014. He eventually earned a regular roster spot during the 2014-15 season, playing in 18 Stanley Cup playoff games. He scored two of his four goals in the Stanley Cup Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes following the 2016 season, but returned as a free agent in 2024. His first season back was his most productive with the Blackhawks, when he scored 15 goals and 58 points. In 272 games in Chicago, he had 46 goals and 137 points. He is entering the final year of his current contract.

No. 88 – Patrick Kane

What can be said about Patrick Kane that hasn’t already been said? Not only one of the greatest Blackhawks of all-time, but one of the greatest American-born players to ever lace up a pair of skates. He did it all with the Blackhawks after being the first overall pick of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He scored 446 goals and 1,225 points in 1,161 regular-season games. In 136 postseason contests, he scored 52 goals and 132 points. He won three Stanley Cups, the Calder Trophy, Art Ross Trophy, Hart Trophy, Ted Lindsay Award, and Conn Smythe Trophy. Oh, and he’s back for two more years to see what he can do with an exciting young core including Connor Bedard, Frank Nazar, and Anton Frondell.

No. 89 - Andreas Athanasiou

Andreas Athanasiou was a frustrating player to watch. He had world-class speed, which gave him plenty of prime scoring opportunities, but he lacked the finish to be an NHL star. He signed with the Blackhawks in 2022 and scored 20 goals for the second time in his career. His 40-point performance earned him a two-year contract extension. Unfortunately, injuries and poor play limited him to only three goals and 10 points in 36 games over the duration of the deal.

No. 90 – Tyler Johnson

Fun Fact: Sacha Boisvert switched from No. 12 to No. 90 for this season.

Tyler Johnson came over to the Blackhawks in a 2021 trade with the Lightning for Brent Seabrook’s contract. He spent three tough seasons in Chicago as he dealt with various injuries and how to adapt from going from winning back-to-back Stanley Cups to a rebuilding team. His best season was his last, when he scored 17 goals and 31 points in 67 games. In his 149 games, he scored 31 goals and 68 points.
