Blackhawks sign Ethan Del Mastro to Two-Year Contract Extension

The Chicago Blackhawks originally drafted Ethan Del Mastro in the fourth round of the 2021 NHL Draft. He has spent his last three seasons with the organization, bouncing back and forth between the Rockford IceHogs and Chicago. During his time with the Blackhawks, he has played 45 games, scoring two goals and five assists and logging 24 penalty minutes. He averaged 16:33 minutes of ice time during this time.

The Blackhawks agreed to terms with Del Mastro, who was their last restricted free agent. He signed a two-year deal similar to his fellow young defenseman and teammate, Kevin Korchinski. Both of these players will be competing for a position on the Blackhawks, while the other will most likely begin the year in Rockford (unless they are claimed on waivers).

Del Mastro will be among tight defense competition

Along with Korchinski and Del Mastro, there is a logjam of young defensemen on the team that includes Artyom Levshunov and Sam Rinzel. Even Wyatt Kaiser and Alex Vlasic are 25 or younger. Del Mastro needs to have a standout performance in training camp and preseason if he wants a chance of making the trip to Vegas for the opening game. However, there is a good chance he may end up on waivers at the end of camp.

Overall, this is a fair deal for both the Blackhawks and Del Mastro as he attempts to play his way into the top seven defensemen.
