A trio of recent Chicago Blackhawks first-round picks all found the back of the net, while the Battle of Florida was an all-out war.

The Chicago Blackhawks wrapped up their preseason last night. There is no practice today, so training camp is over! We made it! Final roster moves will likely come later today before the team boards the plane to Florida. They will practice in the Sunshine State on Monday before opening the season on Tuesday.

Blackhawks Chirps

  • Since the Blackhawks were at home, I sat in on the CHGO Blackhawks Postgame Podcast as we discussed the final roster and the futures of Kevin Korchinski and Lukas Reichel.
  • Blackhawks’ top prospect Anton Frondell had a big two-goal game on Thursday, including scoring a “Michigan” goal. He followed that up on Saturday by becoming the second youngest player in Swedish Hockey League history to score a hat trick. He has six goals and eight points through nine games.
  • Sacha Boisvert made his debut for Boston University last night. He made quite the first impression with a goal and an assist in a 4-2 win over Long Island University.
  • Václav Nestrášil played his first NCAA game for UMass, and the transition from the United States Hockey League to college hockey was seamless. He scored a goal in the 5-3 victory over Northern Michigan.
  • On this date in 2005, the Blackhawks and the National Hockey League returned to the ice after an owners’ lockout cost us the 2004-05 season. Head coach Trent Yawney made his debut behind the bench, but the Blackhawks lost 5-3 to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Mark Bell, Curtis Brown, and Rene Bourque had the Blackhawks’ goals while Nikolai Khabibulin made 19 saves.
  • Blackhawks Birthday Roll Call, Oct. 5: Lorne Chabot and Roy Conacher.

NHL Chirps

  • Speaking of the Wild, they signed goaltender Filip Gustavsson to a five-year contract extension worth $34 million. He’ll make $6.8 million a year starting next season and is locked in through the 2030-31 season. The deal includes a no-movement clause that takes effect immediately and lasts through the 2027-28 season.
  • The Nashville Predators placed defenseman Nicolas Hague and forward Matthew Wood on injured reserve. Hague will miss the first 2-3 weeks of the regular season due to an upper-body injury, while Wood is considered week-to-week with a lower-body injury.
  • Utah Mammoth forward Logan Cooley has been dealing with an injury for most of the preseason. However, the team his confident that he will be ready to go for the start of the regular season.
  • The Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers played a game last night that made the movie Slap Shot look like a Broadway musical. The game saw 312 combined penalty minutes, with 16 players being ejected. At one point in the third period, the Lightning had only three players on the bench. The Panthers had a goal taken off the board because Niko Mikkola, who was previously ejected, was on the ice. Florida got 17 power plays! The fact that the Panthers had numerous opening night players dressed for this game was insane! Just take a look at some of this carnage:
  • NHL Birthday Roll Call, Oct. 5: Dean Prentice, Patrick Roy, Mario Lemieux, Fredrik Olausson, Nate Thompson, Michael Grabner, Logan Shaw, Sven Baertschi, Martin Frk, Nikolas Matinpalo, and Gavin Brindley.
