The Chicago Blackhawks find themselves in a very interesting spot as they head into the offseason. They are now three seasons into Connor Bedard's career and are entering the next phase of their rebuild.
After spending the last handful of seasons selling off assets, they will be looking to add this summer, and not just anyone. They will be looking to add impactful players, and the first one they should target is Mason McTavish from the Anaheim Ducks.
Mason McTavish should be at the top of the Chicago Blackhawks' priority list
There are at least 100 reasons why the Blackhawks should be interested in McTavish. But the biggest season is because the Ducks are reportedly making him available, and given his age, they need to jump all over that.
McTavish, 23, has played in the NHL for five seasons and just recently signed a six-year, $42 million extension with the Ducks on Sept 28th, 2025. However, now, he looks to be the odd man out in Anaheim. Since the emergence of Cutter Gauthier, Leo Carlsson, and some of the veteran additions, McTavish has been passed over and could benefit from a change of scenery.
The best destination for him to land is with his long-time close friend, Bedard. The two have talked openly about their friendship and how it's been fun to play against each other. Imagine how fun it would be to be on the same team?
McTavish is a natural-born center, but could shift to the wing if he finds instant chemistry with Bedard. If not, he would be a very reliable second-line center for years to come. McTavish's career high in points is 52, which came just two seasons ago. If he were able to find his footing again on a young Chicago team, he could surpass that fairly easily.
At this time, there is no word on whether the Blackhawks are the front-runner or even a serious suitor. But, if they want to make Bedard happy long-term, it could start with a nice extension and a trade to bring one of his best friends to town.
