We didn't know it yet, but in 2016 the Chicago Blackhawks dynasty was unfortunately winding down. Its dawn having arose not even a decade ago and it was slowly melting into decadence. But that didn't mean fans weren't treated to some high-stakes action and sometimes outright hilarious moments.
One of those moments came in the 2016 playoffs, when the Hawks faced one of their fiercest rivals, the St. Louis Blues. It was one memorable series, and Crawford made it even more memorable when Robby Fabbri barreled into him during Game 4 of the heated series.
When this happens, you'd see an enforcer or, in more recent years, a glue player step up for their goalie, even if it was clear Fabbri's momentum slammed him into Crawford. But that night, Crawford stepped up and threw some haymakers once he caught Fabbri at the boards.
And, in typical hockey fashion, the matchup between the forward and netminder turned into your typical exchanges of greetings you often see during the playoffs. Okay, so you could call it a brawl at that point, especially since the officials weren't shy about handing out penalty minutes.
Robby Fabbri got the strangest penalty after Corey Crawford went after him
Of course, Crawford wasn't getting off scot-free here, since he started the whole thing, which led to a minor roughing penalty. Officials also dished out penalties to Alex Pietrangelo and Kevin Shattenkirk of the Blues, and the Hawks' Andrew Ladd, which would've kept the two teams at even strength with a skater serving a penalty for Crawford.
But here's the kicker: Fabbri, somehow, got tagged with goaltender interference, even if it looked like a Hawks player pushed him into Crawford. So, if you're doing the math, it led to the Hawks snagging the man advantage here.
Duncan Keith even scored on the power play, giving the Hawks the lead in a game they desperately needed to win. But, that lead was short-lived, as the Blues would storm back and take both the game and a commanding 3-1 lead in the series.
But, the Hawks weren't going down without (no pun intended) a fight. They snagged Games 5 and 6, carrying momentum into a Game 7 showdown that went down in Arch City. But unfortunately for the Hawks, they came up short, and ended up going home after the first-round knockout.
Still, through it all, the Hawks could claim a small victory here when, despite the fact this was almost certainly incidental contact, that they ended up with a power play and a goal to show for it. No, it didn't win them the game, but it was, nevertheless, satisfying for the moment.
