The Chicago Blackhawks not only lost the NHL Draft Lottery, but they dropped a spot in the draft. The Blackhawks will pick third in the NHL Draft after the New York Islanders jumped up 10 spots to nab the No. 1 overall pick. The ping-pong balls went the Utah Hockey Club's way, which knocked the Blackhawks down a spot.
For the first time in the past three lotteries, the Blackhawks dropped instead of moving up. Hey, that is the risk of the NHL Draft Lottery.
Not winning the No. 1 overall pick is not the end of the world. There is no clear-cut generational talent at the top of the draft. Plus, the consensus No. 1 prospect is a defenseman. The Blackhawks have a plethora of young blueliners who could be a top-pair defender.
Also, if the Hawks won the No. 1 pick, they would be prevented from winning the top pick over the next two drafts. Hopefully, the Hawks are leaving the NHL Draft Lottery territory, but it would be nice to have the ability to move up in next year's draft in case they do not. That is when Gavin McKenna is draft-eligible, and he is considered a generational talent.
The hope was that the Hawks would pick second overall. That would have put the franchise in a prime position to draft forward Michael Misa, the consensus second-best prospect in the draft.
If everything goes to chalk, the Blackhawks will see the San Jose Sharks once again get in the way of Chicago adding the ideal bigger forward to skate with Connor Bedard.
However, there is still a chance Misa could fall to the third pick if the New York Islanders decide to draft the hometown prospect, James Hagens.
The Boston College prospect grew up on Long Island and was raised as a diehard Islanders fan (subscription is required to access content linked). That has many Islanders fans hoping the team takes him.
For those in the camp of wanting the Hawks to draft Misa, root for the Islanders front office to listen to its fan base.
Now, it is not totally crazy for the Islanders to agree with their fans, as Hagens was considered the top prospect only until recently.
Just a reminder for #Isles fans. James Hagens was the #1 ranked prospect for this 2025 draft since June of 2024 until this past December roughly. Anyone acting like Schaefer and Misa are head and shoulders better are out to lunch.

If the isles drafted Hagens 1st overall you…
Remember, an organization's draft board matters more than, say, what the Athletic's Corey Pronman has listed. He is not as high as some folks are on Hagens, as he ranks the Boston College center fifth (subscription is required to access content linked). Others have Hagens as high as third.
That is why it is possible Hagens could end up with the Blackhawks instead of the Isles. Hagens does rank high in two key traits the team likes in their prospects--skating and hockey intelligence.
The issue is he is on the smallish side, and the Blackhawks already got a lot of forward prospects in that mold.
That is why Misa feels like the ideal prospect for the Blackhawks since he is an inch over six feet tall with a frame to add more bulk. Plus, his skating ability is highly rated, whereas Porter Martone, another big forward, lacks in that area.
However, the Islanders can take Hagens, and there would still not be a chance to draft Misa.
The Sharks could decide to have a one-two punch of nicely sized centers on their roster. Macklin Celebrinin, last year's No. 1 overall pick, could center the first line while Misa centers the second.
That is why Hawks fans favoring Misa better hope the Sharks do what the Blackhawks did last year and take the top defenseman in the draft if the Islanders pass on Matthew Schaefer. Schaefer is considered the best defensive prospect in a draft that is thin on players who project to be No. 1 defenseman.
By doing what the Hawks did in last year's draft when they drafted Artyom Levshunov, the Sharks would be copying the blueprint of drafting their top forward and top defenseman in back-to-back drafts.
It is not a bad plan, since to win a Stanley Cup, a team needs three elite forwards and at least two elite defensemen, along with a goalie.
That is the path to how the Blackhawks get to draft Misa, who scored 62 goals and passed out 72 assists for the Saginaw Spirit. That type of production, plus his size, is what makes him the ideal player for the Hawks to take. Better hope the Islanders and Sharks do not get the same idea.
