The biggest wins and worst losses in Blackhawks history

The Chicago Blackhawks have played 6,970 regular-season games since debuting in 1926, plus an additional 548 playoff contests. As an Original Six team with a lot of history, including six Stanley Cup championships, the franchise is bound to have some memorable and not-so-memorable matches in its history.

Today, we dive into the Blackhawks' record book to revisit the franchise's biggest victories and most lopsided defeats in both the regular season and the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Blackhawks best regular season victory

January 30, 1969 - Chicago 12 v. Philadelphia 0

It was going to be a special night for the Blackhawks in late January at The Spectrum in Philadelphia. Once Stan Mikita opened the scoring at 2:06, Chicago earned a 6-0 lead after the first before scoring another six over the final two periods for a 12-0 win. Three of the game’s first goals came on special teams, with Mikita and Chico Maki scoring shorthanded while Dennis Hull added a power-play goal.

In the boxscore, Pit Martin had five points along with Hull, while Jim Pappin had a hat trick and Denis DeJordy made 37 saves in the shutout win. Overall, 12 of the 17 Chicago skaters registered a point. Surprisingly, Doug Favell gave up six goals, and Hall of Famer Bernie Parent also surrendered six.

Chicago’s best playoff victory

April 30, 1990 - Chicago 8 v. St. Louis 2

The team record for most goals in a playoff game is nine vs. Detroit in 1985, but the Blackhawks only won that game by four goals. Meanwhile, their largest margin of victory in the Stanley Cup playoffs is six goals, a feat achieved on seven occasions. One of the franchise's most memorable playoff victories came in Game 7 of the 1990 Norris Division Final against the St. Louis Blues.

On April 30, Jeremy Roenick had two first-period goals to put Chicago up 2-0 before Steve Larmer scored and set up the team's other two goals in the middle frame to build up a 5-1 lead. Larmer didn't stop in the third, setting up the first two goals before Duane Sutter scored an unassisted goal to wrap up the 8-2 win and advance the Blackhawks to the Clarence Campbell Conference Final.

Out of the 19 Chicago players in the game, 14 had a point while Ed Belfour made 26 saves in the win. In the loss, both Vincent Riendeau and Curtis Joseph gave up four goals apiece.

Blackhawks’ worst regular season loss

December 4, 1987 - Detroit 12 v. Chicago 0

The Blackhawks have given up 12 goals in a regular-season game on six occasions, but in five of those contests, they scored at least one goal. However, in early December 1987, the Detroit Red Wings, led by Steve Yzerman’s four points, routed Chicago at Joe Louis Arena.

Similar to Chicago’s epic night against the Flyers almost two decades prior, the Red Wings opened up a 6-0 first-period lead while scoring three apiece over the final periods to pick up a 12-0 win. Tim Higgins had a hat trick, and Greg Stefan made 19 saves for a shutout. It was a rough outing for Bob Mason, who surrendered nine goals, while Darren Pang gave up three in relief.

Chicago’s worst playoff loss

May 4, 1985 - Edmonton 11 v. Chicago 2

In one of the highest-scoring playoff series of all time, the Edmonton Oilers rolled over the Blackhawks in Game 1 of the 1985 Clarence Campbell Conference Finals. Despite keeping the score close, 3-1 after the first period, the Oilers erupted for eight consecutive goals in the second and third, before Chicago added another one in garbage time.

Surprisingly, no Edmonton players scored a hat trick, but Paul Coffey and Wayne Gretzky each had four points, while 15 different Oilers picked up a point and Grant Fuhr made 26 saves. Unfortunately, Murray Bannerman was on the hook for the loss with seven goals against, while Warren Skorodenski gave up four.
