The Chicago Blackhawks have spent the last few years building around their young players, and the 2026-27 roster finally looks like a group that can give those players some help. There is still a lot of youth throughout the lineup, but Chicago has added enough NHL experience to make things a little easier on players like Connor Bedard and Frank Nazar.

The addition of Kane and Byram is huge for the Blackhawks

The addition of Patrick Kane is probably the most obvious example. Kane is obviously not the same player he was during his first run with Chicago, but bringing him back gives the Blackhawks a veteran who has been through just about everything in the NHL.

That could be pretty valuable for some of the younger players on this roster. Nazar is one of the players who could benefit from having someone like Kane around, both on the ice and away from it. There are a lot of young players trying to figure things out in Chicago, and having an experienced player around who has already been through those situations can help.

Bowen Byram is another important addition. The Blackhawks needed to improve their blue line, and Byram gives them another young defenceman who already has NHL experience. He can play important minutes and should become one of the bigger parts of Chicago's defense.

That is really what makes this roster interesting. Chicago isn't simply throwing a bunch of young players into the lineup and hoping they figure it out. The Blackhawks are starting to add players who can help them now while still fitting into the team's long-term plans.

Bedard needs the help, desperately

Bedard has been the center of attention in Chicago since being selected first overall, but now the Blackhawks have enough around him to take some of the pressure off. He is going to miss time with his injury, but having more talent around him when he returns could make a big difference.

The additions of Kane, Byram, and the other players brought in this offseason give Chicago more depth than it has had in recent years. Bedard shouldn't have to do everything himself when he gets back, and that is important for both him and the Blackhawks.

There are still plenty of questions about how quickly this young group can take the next step. Nazar, Bedard, and the other young players are still developing, and Chicago isn't suddenly going to become an experienced team overnight.

At the same time, this roster looks much more prepared to support those players. The Blackhawks have young talent they can build around, but they also have dependable NHL veterans who can help them along the way. That balance could be one of the most important parts of the 2026-27 season, and because of that, it could finally push the Blackhawks up the standings and to hopefully compete for a wildcard spot.
