With the recent news that the Blackhawks are looking to potentially trade up at the 2025 NHL Draft, it is a good time to look back at all of the recent trade rumors surrounding the Hawks on draft day.
Just after the 2024 NHL Draft last year, rumors started to swirl that Blackhawks general manager almost pulled off a crazy draft day trade. After the Hawks selected Artyom Levshunov, Chicago offered a future unprotected first and second round pick for the Columbus Blue Jacket's fourth overall pick, per The Athletic.
Davidson and the Blackhawks were hoping to draft Ivan Demidov with the fourth overall pick, a deal that ultimately fell through and saw Demidov go fifth overall to the Montreal Canadiens.
It wasn't very long ago that the Blackhawks did make some crazy moves on draft day. At the 2022 NHL Draft, Chicago sent Kirby Dach to the Montreal Canadiens and Alex DeBrincat to the Ottawa Senators for a handful of draft picks combing back.
At the 2021 NHL Draft the Blackhawks sent Adam Boqvist, two first round picks and a second round pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Seth Jones. In 2017, the Blackhawks made a couple of draft day trades that still haunt the team years later.
The point is, Chicago is no stranger to draft day trades, so does a potential move for Michael Misa make sense?
Could fans see a surprise draft day trade by the Blackhawks?
If history has taught us anything it is that anything is possible. The Blackhawks could very well find a way to trade up to draft Michael Misa. It would likely take moving into the first overall slot using the third overall pick, but Davidson could find other ways to get creative.
If Chicago does manage to pull off a heist to add Misa, it seems likely the deal would come in the days leading up to the draft. While a move like this would make for some great television at the 2025 NHL Draft, a deal to acquire the first overall pick just seems like something the Hawks and Islanders would talk about ahead of time.
