The Chicago Blackhawks were shut out of the first and second overall picks during last night's NHL Draft Lottery, but luckily a top prospect will be coming to Chicago when the team drafts third overall.
On Monday night the NHL conducted its first ever live televised NHL Draft lottery. It was interesting seeing the ping pong balls come down live, speeding up a network program that often has taken way to long to finish.
The New York Islanders were the big winners of the night, as they moved up nine spots to land the first overall pick, additionally Utah H.C. jumped from Number 14 to 4 with the second lottery drawing.
With Utah moving up, but only being able to jump ten spots, the San Jose Sharks and Blackhawks fell into the second and third spots in the draft order.
While this may not be the ideal scenario for the Blackhawks, drafting at third overall isn't horrible, and General Manager Kyle Davidson seemed excited when all was said and done.
"Third overall, we’re going to get a great player," Davidson said during a media availability following the lottery drawing. "I’m excited to head into meetings next week with our amateur group and start the process of nailing down where we want to line up the board and what it looks like. We stayed in good range where I think we’re going to be really excited with what we end up with.”
The Blackhawks know where they are drafting, but a lot needs to get done by draft day.
With Chicago drafting at three the big question remains, who will Chicago draft and more importantly who will the Sharks take with the second overall pick.
Most outlets have Matthew Schaefer going first overall, but nothing is official until the Islanders announce their pick on stage—who can forget the Montreal Canadiens fans wearing Shane Wright jerseys on draft day just a few years ago.
While the Blackhawks will be landing a solid prospect with the third overall pick, they are at the whims of New York and San Jose first.
Additionally, Chicago still has a major piece of the puzzle missing with no head coach. The team missed out on their top choice with David Carle signing a massive extension with the University of Denver, and Davidson may want to bring in a head coach to also give his input on the draft.
The Blackhawks are no stranger to the third overall pick.
Terry Caffery, Denis Savard, Eddie Olcyzk, Cam Barker, Jonathan Toews and Kirby Dach all were drafted third overall by the Chicago Blackhawks. Out of all the top five picks, Chicago has drafted third overall most having drafted in the spot six times.
The Blackhawks have an opportunity to bring in another top forward with the pick, and hopefully its someone who can step in right away to play alongside the Hawks young core group.
